
Congratulations to Sacramento Public Library upon selecting Selwa Shamy as their Deputy Director/Chief Public Services Officer! With a 20-year career spanning just about every aspect of public librarianship, Selwa has been on an eclectic and multifaceted professional journey. Selwa started their career at Brooklyn Public Library in social science reference. They moved on to children’s services in a suburban public library in New Jersey, producing a children’s cable television show, and was then hired as a computer specialist in the early stages of library automation. At Somerset County Library System of New Jersey, Selwa spent almost 14 years working with teens, then children and adults, and finally leading system-wide public services for 10 branches. Seeking a new challenge, Selwa became Assistant Director of Montclair Public Library, where they had a hand in every aspect of service. They led a talented team of managers and staff with a focus on exceptional customer service, community outreach and engagement, and efficient facility operations. Recognized for their energy, adaptability, and dedication to community impact, Selwa is ready to bring their brightness, expertise, and vision to SPL.
